Story of Grouper (meru)
Within European championship of spearfishing 2009 - Algeria
Firstly, people have to know that I have affection and a deep respect for Russian and Ukrainian teams. I used to meet them on almost all the cometitions I participated around the world, they are really great competitors,...

The story takes place during the European championship of spearfishing 2009 at Tipaza in Algeria. One guy of the Russian team had speared and unhooked
a nice Meru in the last hour of the competition, the fish get hidden in his hole and unfortunately, the spearo did not get this good catch for the final weighing...

Nevertheless, here wasn't the biggest interest of this story, because only the fight beetween the man and his prey does really matter.

On board of one of the security boat, I have noticed in the distance and I immediately figured out the situation when I get closer, a fight was happening.
I feared that the russian spearo was doing too much effort and taking the risk to sink to the bottom.
So I decided to stay a moment beside him for his safety.

According to what I understood from the surface (and it is really not obvious when you don't speak russian), I was giving him some advices for trying get the Meru out his hole, but he could finally not to do it...

The game was not over anyway. The day after, the competition was over.
I negociated a boat with the security service and we get back on the spot with 2 members of the ukrainian team. Actually, the russian spearo who shooted the Meru before had to grab his flight back this day, so he just bequeathed his fight to his ukrainian's mates...

Once we gat back on the spot of yesterday and after a wise analyse of the situation with few dives, I figured out that the Meru was well stacked in the bottom of a cramped rift. The main point was to find a way to get him out.

When we observed more closely this rift surroundings, we noticed a small hole at the opposite side. This small hole was linked to the  same cavity but too small for passing a arm thru.
Nevertheless, like I thought, it was possible to put a spear inside.
And there you have it! Then, we just had to push over the meru with the spear from one side before to grab him and get him out by the other side.

The Meru fishing game is definitely one of my favourite because it demands really often patience and reflection...
